In many ways, fence installation on uneven ground is very similar to regular fence installation. However, there are a few setup tips you should keep in mind if you aim to do a bit of DIY terrain fencing

Let's take a look at these useful pieces of advice for your sloped fence installation project.

Mark the Fence Line

As with any other fence setup or project, you should use strings and stakes to delineate the fence line. Wherever there are slopes or uneven pieces of ground, make sure that you measure and mark changes in elevation to determine how the posts and panels need to be positioned.

Consider the Installation Method for the Terrain

On sloped terrain, there are two different installation methods you could consider.

  • The stepped method involves installing panels in a horizontal manner and adjusting post heights to create a stepping effect.
  • The raked method requires angling the panels to follow the slope, maintaining a smooth and continuous line. This is a bit more challenging than the stepped method, which is generally the more common approach for DIYers.

The choice of method would depend on the gradient of the ground, your aesthetic preferences, and the skills of the installer.

Install Your Posts

As with any regular fence installation, you will need to dig the post holes at carefully marked intervals along the fence line, but adjust for the slope where necessary.

The holes need to be deep enough to provide stability, and on sloped terrain, you need to ensure that the posts are vertically plumb while still accounting for the angle of the slope.

Concrete Considerations

With the holes dug and the posts inserted, you will need to pour concrete and ensure that the posts are aligned and level. The concrete will need to set for at least 24 hours to ensure a stable foundation.

However, when dealing with sloped and uneven conditions, you might need to use temporary supports or braces to hold the posts in place until the concrete cures.

Adjust the Panels for Fit

On sloped terrain, you might need to do a bit of shaping and cutting of the panels before you install them.

If you use the stepped method, you might need to trim the panels to fit the height of each step.

If you're using the raked method, on the other hand, you will need to angle the panels slightly to match the incline of the slope.

Secure the Panels to the Posts

With your panels cut and measured to match the slope and gradient, you need to attach them to the posts using the fixators supplied by Betafence. Where there are sloped areas, you may want to double-check these connections for strength, as additional strain may be placed on the posts and panels due to the incline.
